Scope and Contents

The Engineer’s Bell Book is a record of all bells, signals, and other orders received by the throttleman regarding movement of the ship’s propellers. A separate bell sheet is used for each shaft each day. Entries are made in the Bell Book by the throttleman or his assistant as soon as an order is received. Before going off watch, the EOOW or watch supervisor signs the Bell Book on the line following the last entry for his watch.

This folder contains miscellaneous souvenirs from Lyness’s service, including liberty and leave souvenirs, All Hands magazine issues, and more recent reference material and clippings. The ephemera series includes many types of cards: a shellback card, Imperial Domain of the Golden Dragon, Officers’ Service Club of the United Nations, Navy driver’s permits, Officer’s Beach Club, and a nametag.
