Biography

Alfred “Pete” Smith was born and raised in Hempstead, Long Island, and served as the operations officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) from 1970 to 1972. Smith worked in, and improved, ASCAC (Anti-Submarine Classification and Analysis Center) and C.I.C. (Combat Information Center) during Intrepid’s time as an ASW (anti-submarine warfare) carrier. Smith spent 12 years in the VS (anti-submarine squadron) community, including his 2 years aboard Intrepid. After his time on Intrepid, Smith became the head of CNO briefers in the Pentagon, commanded the attack cargo ship St. Louis (LKA-116), and commanded the helicopter carrier Tripoli, before returning to the Pentagon to serve as the executive assistant to the Navy’s Director of Command and Control.

Scope and Contents Alfred “Pete” Smith served as the operations officer aboard Intrepid from 1970 to 1972. Smith began his interview by stating that he joined the Navy Reserves in 1947, at the age of 17. He then provided a brief outline of his early Navy career, from being an enlisted reservist, to joining a submarine division, and then entering the Naval Academy, graduating in 1953.
