Biography
Ivan Zieg is the grandson of Harold Lawrence Zieg, who enlisted in Omaha, Nebraska on March 7, 1944. He was received on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) July 25 as a Seaman Second Class (Radarman), meaning that he was training to be a radarman. He was quickly promoted to first class in late September and to Radarman Third Class on November 14. On November 25, he was listed as “Missing in Action, after Japanese Aircraft exploded on Flight Deck.” He is listed as dead in the U.S. Navy State Summary of War Casualties for Nebraska. Zieg had two children, the youngest was 9 months old when he was killed. His wife Betty, never remarried.
