Biography

Joyce Benedict is the wife of David Benedict, who served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11). Mr. Benedict served as a yeoman second class (YN2) in the Engineering Department from 1958 until 1961. The Museum interviewed Mr. Benedict for our oral history collection in 2014 (see OHP034).

Receipt; Inside the envelope there is a receipt for "Downpayment of $5.00 Dollars for Class ring." It is dated May 10, 1961.

Overview David Benedict served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11). He worked first as a boiler tender in the number two boiler room, and then as a yeoman in the engineering office. On April 25, 1961, steam lines in a fire room ruptured, and steam spilled out into the 2nd and 3rd decks. As Benedict and his crew evacuated the area, he heard a cry for help.
