Biography

Helen M. Mehl was born in Lufkin, Texas, and moved to Long Beach, California, when she was three years old. She married Lieutenant Wayne Mehl in 1961, and spent three years living in Hawaii during Wayne’s service aboard the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577). While in Hawaii, she interacted with other officers’ wives, worked two jobs, attended school, and painted.

Scope and Contents Helen M. Mehl married Lieutenant Wayne Mehl in 1961, and spent three years living in Hawaii during Wayne’s service aboard Growler.
