Biography
Joseph D. Murphy, from Rockaway Beach, New York, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) as a gunnery officer and deck officer during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. Murphy was in charge of a 40mm gun crew on the aft end of the island and spent his entire Navy career aboard Intrepid, from the ship's commissioning to the surrender of Japan. After his time in the Navy, Murphy worked for U.S. Lines and Johns Manville. He then moved to California.
