Biography
Jack Gabler, from South Dakota, served on board the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) as a sonarman third class (SO3) from June 1963 through April 1964, just after the submarine was decommissioned. While on Growler he stood watches in the sonar shack and also served as a mess cook when he first went aboard the submarine. Gabler then served aboard Ulysses S. Grant, a Polaris missile submarine. After his time in the Navy, Gabler attended college and worked in accounting.

He began his interview by stating that he had initially planned to become a veterinarian, however he explained how a turn of events and a chance meeting with a Navy recruiter resulted in him joining the Navy.
