Biography
Richard K. Gaines had a long and successful career in the U.S. Navy, ultimately attaining the rank of captain. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1921 and retired in 1955. In August 1943, Gaines became Intrepid’s first executive officer. Due to various changes in command, Gaines had temporary command of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid (CV-11) from March 28 to April 19, 1944 and from May 19 to 30, 1944. Gaines served as the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid’s (CV-11) executive officer for approximately one year.

Joseph D. Murphy served aboard Intrepid as a gunnery officer and deck officer during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. Murphy began his interview by discussing his family and the community where he was raised. He then described hearing the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor, joining the Navy Reserve, and receiving his commission as an ensign from Columbia midshipmen school.
