Biography
Duane F. Heatwole, from Glendale, Arizona, served aboard the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) as a commissaryman petty officer second class from 1960 to 1964. He spent the majority of his time in the galley preparing food for the crew, however he was also stationed in the wardroom with a manual plot when they test fired missiles. Heatwole also served aboard Bonefish and Halibut. After leaving the Navy he returned to Arizona where he worked at his family’s business, a Frito-Lay franchise that his father had purchased in 1947.

He also described how he acquired different types of food, how this food was loaded into the boat, and how the food was stored.
