Biography
Richard Lee Meyers, from Denver, Colorado, served aboard the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) as a machinist’s mate second class from October 1961 to September 1963. While aboard Growler he initially served as a mess cook before working in the engine room as an oiler and a qualified engineman. Meyers provided detailed descriptions of the maintenance required to keep Growler’s engines operating. He also discussed life aboard the submarine, stops in Midway and Adak, and an encounter with a Russian trawler. After leaving the Navy, Meyers spent 47 years as a real estate broker.
