Biography

Rodger Wallace Jones (1904-1978) enlisted in the Navy at Lincoln, Nebraska as a Seaman 1st class on November 10, 1942. He served in Torpedo Squadron 18 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11). Jones was twice shot down in enemy territory, and was missing in action from October 29, 1944 to January 17, 1945. He was discharged September 12, 1945, at which point his rating was Aviation Ordnanceman Petty Officer 1st class.

Overview The Rodger Jones papers date from 1944 to 1953 and are divided into the following six series: writings, correspondence, service records, History of Air Group 18, ephemera, and magazines. Writings, correspondence, and service records document Jones’s time MIA in the Philippines and his interactions with Filipino friends, including members of the Hakbalahap guerilla movement. Correspondence also covers pilot N.J. “Rocky” Roccaforte’s death. Ephemera includes membership cards.
