Damage Control Assistant (DCA) records, ca. 1954–74; bulk 1966–74

The Damage Control Assistant (DCA) was responsible for effective damage control organization and for repairs to the ship’s hull, machinery, and piping systems (except as specifically assigned elsewhere). From 1969 to 1972, the DCA was consecutively Lt. Cdr. H.J. Fees, Lt. Cdr. C.J. Allain, Cdr. M.R. Norby, and Lt. Cdr. W.D. Jones. From 1972 to 1973, the DCA was Lt. Cdr. Douglas A. Green. R Division, led by R Division Officer Ensign J. Gregory from 1972 to 1973, and A Division, led by A Division Officer Chief Warrant Officer 3 J. Connell from 1972 to 1973, fell under the DCA’s administrative authority. R Division was composed of ship’s welders, cutters, carpenters, and pipefitters. R Division damage control men formed the nucleus of repair parties charged with controlling and repairing damage to the ship. A Division maintained the ship’s emergency diesels, boat engines, and all auxiliary machinery about the ship. It also controlled the heating system, and ran the machine shop.
