Engineering Department records, February 17, 1944–March 15, 1974, n.d.; bulk 1966–March 15, 1974

 Series
Identifier: I.B.d

Scope and Contents

This series consists of records originating from Intrepid’s Engineering Department, which was led by the Engineer Officer (sometimes referred to as the Engineering Officer). From 1970 to 1971, the Engineer Officer was Cdr. M.R. Norby; from 1972 to 1973, Cdr. J.D. Korthe. The Department consisted of B and M Divisions led by the Main Propulsion Assistant, R and A Divisions led by the Damage Control Assistant, and E Division. Names of Division Officers are listed in the description for the appropriate sub-series. B Division maintained the boilers and ran the steam evaporators that fed the boilers and furnished personnel with fresh water. M Division maintained the ship’s main engines, turbines, generators, and related auxiliary machinery. R Division controlled and repaired damage to the ship. A Division maintained the ship’s emergency diesels, hydraulic equipment, boat engines, and all auxiliary machinery; controlled the heating system; and ran the machine shop. E Division supplied the ship with light and power and maintained and repaired electrical apparatus and outlets.

The Engineering Department records begin with a small volume of higher-level administrative correspondence and reference material about the department overall.

Arrangement

The arrangement then follows the organizational structure of the department (with a sub-series devoted to each division, and further sub-series for any personnel or other administrative entities within the divisions). This arrangement attempts to preserve and re-create the original order of the records, assigning records to their office of origin within the Engineering Department whenever possible.

Last in the arrangement come records for Engineering Department record types and activities that were not identifiable as originating with a particular division or its work. Some of these record types and activities involve entities outside Intrepid itself. This is where you can find: the Electrical Log, which is a product of both M and E Divisions; 3M (Maintenance and Material Management) System records; SHIPALT (Ship Alteration) Briefs and Alteration Approval Records; Shipyard records; Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) inspection records; and Inactivation records. Many of these categories are interrelated. For instance: maintenance is tracked in the ship’s 3M System, INSURV inspections and SHIPALT briefs can result in maintenance activities performed on board and by shipyards, and inactivation has ties to shipyards and INSURV inspections as well as being tracked by onboard maintenance personnel. Researchers looking for material on these topics should also check the records categorized by office of origin. For example, B Division’s Oil Shack records include inactivation material that originated in that office, and they were kept with the office’s other records to preserve context.
