The diary chronciles Jones' deployment on Intrepid starting with leaving his family at Naval Air Station Cecil Field in Duval County, Florida to join Intrepid at Newport News, Virginia. On the trip to Vietnam, he writes of uncertainty of being able to cross the Suez canal because of the conflict between Egypt and Israel. He discusses flight ops, aircraft repairs, weather conditions, and alpha strikes conducted while on the line in Vietnam.

Jones details major Intrepid events such as casualties within VA-15 and VSF-3, Ed Martin's bail out and capture, Mike Krebs's bail out and safe recovery, Denny Key being shot down and captured, the Forrestal fire

Other highlights include Miss America's visit and performance on the ship, Crossing the Line, change of command, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas on board, partying in "Triple Stix," ports of call Subic Bay, Olongopo, Yokosuka, and Hong Kong, visitng Sick Bay when he has a cold and seeing "Doc Marshall," mentions of missing his wife and family, and being homesick.

Overview

James Richard Jones, who went by Jim, was the Aircraft Maintenance Officer with attack squadron VA-34, which was embarked on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) in 1967. His diary chronicles his time aboard USS Intrepid and mentioned several major events in Intrepid's history at that time.
