Richard Montfort Diaries
Scope and Contents
The diaries detail Montfort’s pre-war life and his Navy service. Almost every day has a comprehensive entry, with the exception of the missing pages at February 5-9, 1944. Highlights include the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, Montfort getting his ‘warrant letter’ from the Navy, and major Intrepid events such as the commissioning, Crossing the Line, participation in battles, kamikaze and torpedo attacks, damage to the ship, the ship’s arrivals and departures from ports, changes of command, and ship anniversaries. There are also many descriptions of everyday life on Intrepid. Montfort served on Intrepid from the commissioning until April 27, 1945.
