Scope and Contents

From the Record Group:

This series consists of papers that would have been in the possession of Intrepid sailors but that are unrelated to sailors’ official duties on board. It is made up of: an Intrepid Christmas card, unsigned but with a written message; two unsigned letters home; annotated maps depicting Intrepid’s route and World War II events; a Crossing the Line Ceremony script; printed poems and songs, some of which mention Intrepid; and liberty and foreign language material.

The last includes souvenirs picked up in ports of call, such as: a Tiger Balm Garden pamphlet; Jokers Club and Courier Club tickets; tickets to a Navy Relief Carnival in Quonset Point, RI from June 29 to July 1, 1973; currency; food and drink labels; receipts; calendars; menus; maps; and postcards. Also present are an Italian advertisement and program for a performance of Intrepid’s band and Japanese propaganda leaflets and newspapers.

The two unsigned letters mention such topics as hard work on board, a nuclear attack drill, plans for visiting home after the ship reaches Norfolk on April 26, 1967, and plans for after service. The letters were found with material belonging to the Gunnery Department and its member Phillip Pugh (from Museum offices, the CIC, and Room 6)—as these are unsigned personal letters and do not match Pugh’s service dates, they have been placed here. The writer may be a member of the Gunnery Department.
