Standard Bearing Books, February 19–May 4, 1973

 Sub-Series
Identifier: I.B.g

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Navigation records are made up of: forms relating to qualification as Officer of the Deck; a report on use of SRN-9 tapes; standard bearing books, which record soundings and bearings taken from the ship to various structures such as lighthouses and tanks; captain’s night orders; deck logs; and quartermaster’s notebooks.

Captain’s night orders are daily records that summarize the ship’s information and provide schedule, operational, tactical, navigational and readiness information for bridge watch standers. They are signed by the captain and initialed by watch standers. Interspersed with the Captain’s night orders are copies of the Admiral’s night orders.

Deck logs consist of daily chronological entries giving major ship data and events such as: the ship's operating orders, its courses and speeds, its position, state of the sea and weather, damage or accident to the ship or its cargo, deaths or injuries to personnel, meeting or adjourning of courts-martial and other formal boards, routine inspections, and changes in the status of the ship's personnel or passengers. The deck logs in the collection are photocopies and are incomplete; there are excerpted pages and sometimes only front covers. The National Archives and Records Administration has the complete deck logs.

Quartermaster’s notebooks are chronological records of events as they occur during the watch. They contain data such as that found in the deck logs, along with more detailed data on subjects like fuel levels and repairs.
