Division Officer personnel binder, ca. 1971–73

 Item
Identifier: I.B.d.ii.1

Scope and Contents

From the File:

M Division maintained the ship’s main engines, turbines, generators, and related auxiliary machinery. It kept machinery at the peak of efficiency to “answer bells” from the bridge—to respond to orders to adjust the ship’s speed. The M Division Officer from 1972 to 1973 was Lt. (j.g.) M. Hobbs. M Division records consist of personnel management records and operating records.

Personnel management records are made up of personnel lists, instructions on human resources topics such as hazing, an organizational chart, berthing and duty assignments, training documentation, decommissioning staffing provisions, and Division Officer’s Personnel Record Forms filled out for members of M Division. There is also a form in which “A Junior Officer” submits a Mark Twain quote to be included in the Plan of the Day at regular intervals.

The Low-Pressure Distilling Plant Operating Record is a daily record for the distilling plants. Personnel of the watch record data and remarks in the record, the watch supervisor signs the remarks for his watch, and the petty officer in charge of the ship’s distilling plants checks all entries for accuracy. The M Division Officer reviews and initials the record, and the MPA’s signature is also present. The Propulsion Steam Turbine and Reduction Gear Operating Record is a daily record maintained for each main engine in operation. The watch supervisor enters the remarks and signs the record for his watch, the petty officer in charge of the engine room checks the accuracy of the record and signs his name, and the MPA signs the record.
