Binder, unbound, 1969–74

 Item
Identifier: I.B.d.ii.2

Scope and Contents

From the File:

Training and reference material includes unbound binder sleeves, a binder titled GQ [General Quarters]/Emergency, and files of training exercises on Damage Control topics for Repair Parties and other ship personnel. The binder sleeves that were found unbound and out of original order appear to have originated with R Division, specifically 1972–73 R Division Material Officer Chief Warrant Officer 2 Larry E. Hafer, and contain a welcome aboard R Division handout. They also include memoranda and other reference material on: repair, repair parties, 3M (Maintenance and Material Management) inspections, and monitoring the ship’s condition; safety procedures, such as for smoking and closed spaces; fire and other emergency procedures such as trouble calls; welding training and educational training films; personnel management topics such as transfer requests and berthing regulations; Department security; and usage of compartment check-off lists and other forms. One memorandum from the Medical Officer to the R Division Officer concerns an R Division sailor’s abnormal chest X-ray and warns against the hazards of asbestos. There is also a form letter giving humorous suggestions for writing home. The GQ/Emergency Binder contained the same plastic binder sleeves as the unbound binder, and so may have also originated with R Division. It contains reference material on NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) attack defense procedures, “Broken Chopsticks” drill (nuclear weapons accident drill), emergency stations, abandoning ship, own ship salvage, scuttling ship, and challenge and reply procedure.
