 Series
Identifier: I.A.b.

Scope and Contents

This series includes dispatches and memoranda. Two dispatches concern Intrepid visiting San Francisco on December 15, 1945; one of these is written as a poem. Other dispatches include instructions for ships to cease offensive operations against Japanese forces, season’s greetings and commendations from Admiral Chester Nimitz, and commendations from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal to ALNAV (All Navy) on the occasion of the end of war with Japan. The last dispatch has many signatures on it.

The memoranda, dating from 1972 to 1973, are sent by the Executive Officer Cdr. L.E. Levenson to department heads and other high-level Intrepid staff. They primarily concern personnel management: mustering; shore patrol and other assignments; training (including a mention of UPWARD Race Relation Education); evaluation; advancement; and retirement. More specific personnel management issues covered include: ID cards; a drug abuse prevention program; supplies and berthing; manning the rails; the creation of an I (Indoctrination) Division for new personnel; request mast (the procedure allowing for any individual to discuss any matter with the Commanding Officer); parking; Familygram dissemination; spouse addresses; an invitation to drinks on HMS Albion; voting in United States elections; and cleanliness and internal sales problems relating to soft drinks. Other memoranda discuss visitors to the ship, such as dignitaries and media representatives, and the assignment of tour guides to welcome visitors. One memorandum discusses how communication with United States government agencies should be handled during deployment.
