Scope and Contents

The file organized by date contains memoranda in regards to: the organization of the Crossing the Line ceremony; Lyness’s duties as Registered Publications Officer, which detail the organization and security of classified publications; a farewell party for Captain Sprague; mail censorship; Admiral Gerald Bogan thanking Sprague for a report on the shakedown cruise; and the Wardroom Mess, addressing its procedures, crew suggestions, and steward’s mates room assignments. Also present are: an inventory of Lyness’s personal effects; a handwritten note welcoming him to his room; Honolulu souvenir receipts; and a Wardroom Mess receipt. From Christmas of 1943 there is: a telegram, Intrepid menu, Intrepid newspaper, and San Francisco rental car form. Other printed ephemera includes: commissioning programs; plans of the day, all filed at September 17, 1943; press news reports; and a program and song sheet for “USS Intrepid Happy Hour.” Please note that all material dating from the shakedown cruise, including a Trinidad map and hotel pamphlet, is filed together at November 3, 1943. Besides the material dating from Lyness’s time on board, there are forms documenting Lyness’s arrival in Newport News and Intrepid alumni association form letters from the 1950s.
